Swimming

The National Curriculum requires that all schools provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Throughout each academic year, all of our Key Stage 2 pupils have weekly swimming lessons.  By the end of the academic year 2018/19, the percentage of pupils achieving each objective was as follows:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres –  83.3%
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] – 80%
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations –  76.7%

Our targets for this year are:

  • To ensure all existing swimmers increase their attainment by 10 metres thus increasing their confidence in water.
  • All remaining non swimmers achieve 25 metres thus meeting the statutory requirements of the national curriculum for PE.
  • All pupils can perform safe self rescue over a varied distance so they are confident and safe in water.
