Teaching, Learning and the Curriculum
At St Stephen’s CE Primary School we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development.
It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of additional opportunities that the school organises in order to enrich the experiences of our children. Our curriculum also includes the social aspects that are essential for life-long learning.
How we identify and assess children with special educational needs
Most children and young people will have their special educational needs met in mainstream schools through good classroom practice. This is called Quality First Teaching.
At St. Stephen’s CE Primary we follow a graduated support approach which is called “Assess, Plan, Do, Review”. This means that we will:
- Assess a child’s special educational needs
- Plan the provision to meet your child’s aspirations and agreed outcomes
- Do put the provision in place to meet those outcomes
- Review the support and progress
As part of this approach, we will produce a SEN Support Plan that describes the provision that we will make to meet a child’s special educational needs and agreed outcomes. Parents and carers will be fully involved in this process.
A small percentage of children and young people with significant learning difficulties might need an assessment that could lead to an Education, Health and Care Plan.
Full details can be found on the Local Offer website.
You can find details of how we adapt the curriculum and make it more accessible for pupils with SEN below:
We make sure that we do all we can to meet the needs of all pupils in school, recognising that all children are individual, unique and have a right to high quality learning experiences throughout every day that they are with us. We make sure that we make learning accessible to all children in class in a number of ways; we may adapt tasks for children, we may change the way learning experiences are offered, using practical tasks or alternative methods of recording ideas. We may deploy adults to work specifically with children, we may give children specific learning experiences carefully planned to best meet their individual needs. This may include delivering specialist programmes recommended by outside agencies, such a Speech and Language Therapists or Occupational Therapists, or and intervention strategies which support children in acquiring and developing English and Maths skills. We do our best to make sure the curriculum we deliver is meaningful, stimulating and challenging for all pupils and actively seek to make learning experiences throughout school creative, inspiring and engaging for everyone. This includes ensuring that a broad programme of extra-curricular activities are offered to all pupils in school, supporting all children to access a range of additional experiences throughout the year, as determined by children’s interests and in consideration of their individual needs. We are very supportive of children and their families and have a strong and committed policy towards pastoral support. We work together with families to develop the emotional well being of our children. This may include working directly with families, liaising with external agencies, such as our Parent Support Advisor, health and social care professionals. Our work in school may include working individually with children and also careful and sensitively planned group work, as appropriate and determined by children’s individual needs.
The attainment and progress of all children is continually monitored by all staff with the Head Teacher. The SENCo and Head Teacher work together in ensuring that all children, including children with SEN, achieve their potential in school in relation to all areas of the curriculum.
