At St. Stephen’s CE Primary School we understand how important a successful transition is to our pupils with additional needs. We work collaboratively with our feeder secondary schools to provide an enhanced level of transition for those who we feel would benefit from this.
The period of transition is tailored to meet the needs of the individual pupil. If it is felt appropriate secondary school colleagues will attend Annual Reviews to meet the current class teacher, parents and most importantly the pupil. We have found this process particularly beneficial in easing any worries or concerns parents and pupils may have. We strive to involve parents/carers as much as possible in their child’s transition to secondary school.
When a secondary school has been allocated to the child, parents are fully involved and consulted at all stages of the transition process.
Transition from each year group within school is supported so that the children have met with their new teachers and are familiar with the new classroom environment and organisation at our ‘Move Up Day’.
New starters for EYFS children are provided with the following opportunities:
- Initial visit with parent/carer.
- EYFS staff visit the children in Nursery settings (when appropriate).
- Children’s visits to EYFS setting in the Summer Term.
- A phased start to Nursery life in September.
Where a child joins us from another school, we ensure that they meet with the Head Teacher or Deputy Headteacher and, with their parents or carers, they come for a school tour. This provides opportunity for the child to get a feel for the school and for school staff to gather information prior to the child starting with us. If required, the child will be offered the support of a peer to help them ease their way into our school. The child will also be closely monitored by the class teacher or teaching assistant.
