Year 5 have had an amazing (and slightly wet) afternoon learning all about water resistance in our science lesson. Pupils have been discussing the shapes of various aquatic animals that live in the world’s oceans and rivers, sharing ideas about why they move so easily through water. Using plasticine, they created different designs that they thought would be more streamlined to cut through water, based on the animals they had discussed. They then took this knowledge further, by making different designs that they thought would gain more upthrust so would either take longer to sink, or even remain floating at the surface.

To help complete this test, pupils agreed on the variables that they wanted to keep the same or to change before carrying it out. Then we had our newly promoted junior scientists wear their own lab coats to carry out the experiment. I feel as though a future calling in some STEM fields are in the making for many of our Year 5 pupils due to how brilliantly they worked in not just this lesson, but all other prior science lessons.
